Changing a Racket Grip

Overgrips

The overgrip
An overgrip has to be placed over the existing replacement grip of your tennis racket. This type of grip provides extra cushioning and moisture absorption, thus improving your playing comfort. Never put an overgrip directly onto the frame. By doing this, vibrations will not be absorbed sufficiently and this will increase the risk of injury. Most overgrips come in packs of three, unless stated otherwise.

How do you replace an overgrip on a tennis racket?
If necessary, remove the old overgrip first. Then remove the foil of the new overgrip. Place the small end on the widest part of your tennis racket. While you keep a hold of the overgrip, turn the racket around so you end up with an overlap at the starting point. Right-handed players turn their grip clockwise, left-handed players rotate counterclockwise. Now keep turning and the grip will roll upwards by itself. Make sure the overlap is no more than 2 or 3 mm. When you reach the tape of the replacement grip, cut off (at an angle) the remaining part of the overgrip. Turn the last piece further around the handle and tie up the ending with the enclosed tape. The tape is elastic and can be tightly wrapped over the replacement grip and around the handle to give a neat finish.

Replacement grips

The replacement grip
The replacement or basic grip is the main grip which is already on the tennis racket when you buy it. The main grip absorbs a large part of your racket's vibrations and plays an important part in the level of playing comfort you experience from your tennis racket. More and more tennis players are discovering the importance of a good replacement grip.

Tip: Replace the grip at least as many times per year as you play hours of tennis per week. If you play 6 hours per week, then replace the grip 6 times per year.

How do you replace the main grip of a tennis racket?
Remove the old main grip from your tennis racket and as much glue as possible that may be left over. Remove the tape strip of the new main grip you are about to replace. Carefully tape the thin end against the side of the widest area of of your tennis racket. Turn the racket around and follow the outer edge of the butt with the grip. At the overlap with the starting point, pull the grip slightly upwards, so that an upward spiral is initialised. Right handed players turn their grip clockwise, left handed players turn anti-clockwise. Now keep turning and the grip will roll upwards by itself. Make sure the thinner finished sides of the replacement grip only overlap by 2 or 3 mm. When the whole grip is fitted, cut of the remaining part of the grip at a neat angle. Turn the last piece around the handle and tie up the ending with the enclosed tape. The tape is elastic and allows itself to be tightly wrapped over the replacement grip and around the handle to give a neat finish.
